USAGE:(1.) Наречие seldom относится к группе наречий типа scarcely, hardly, never, rarely, которые придают предложению отрицательный смысл. В разделительных вопросах seldom употребляется в начальной утвердительной части, придавая ей отрицательный смысл, в результате чего заключительная часть вопроса никогда не бывает в отрицательной форме: You seldom worry about it, do you? Вы редко об этом беспокоитесь, не так ли? В предложениях, содержащих seldom, часто употребляются неопределенно-количественные местоимения any и anything: She seldom says anything. Она редко что-либо говорит. /Она почти никлгда не говорит. (2.) Сочетание very seldom обычно употребляется, когда оно является временным обстоятельством: He comes here very seldom. Он здесь редко бывает. (3.) В виду своей отрицательной семантики seldom не употребляется в вопросительных и отрицательных предложениях. В таких предложениях употребляется often в соединении с глаголом в отрицательной форме, что соответствует русским редко, не часто: We don't often come here. Мы редко (не часто) сюда приходим. We don't often go to the theatre. Мы редко ходим в театр. (4.) Наречие seldom чаще употребляется в книжной, официальной речи. В разговорной речи предпочтительнее употребление сочетания hardly ever: People are hardly ever fooled by this trick. Такие фокусы не часто/редко/почти никогда не вводят людей в заблуждение. (5.) Seldom имеет усилительное значение, когда оно стоит в начале предложения. В этих случаях употребляется инвертированный порядок слов: Seldom does a week pass without a request for information.
